The Environmental Compliance Program started in May 2015 with Portage County Solid Waste District Director, Bill Steiner, overseeing day to day operations of the program. Working side by side with Portage County Sherriff David Doak, Deputy Boulton was assigned to the program. Deputy Boulton is to monitor all drop-off sites to ensure there is no illegal dumping, as well as respond to any reports of littering, open dumping, open burning and scrap tires within Portage County. In 2015, 72 warnings were given and seven charges were filed.
What is Illegal Dumping?
Leaving any non-recyclable items at a drop-off site, on the side of the road, or any other site that is not a designated trash site.
These items include but are not limited to:
- Couches
- Furniture (any kind)
- Mattresses
- TV’s
- Wood
- Construction Debris,
- Flooring (any kind)
- Metal
- Tires
- Siding (any kind)
- Plastic Bags
- Styrofoam
- Bubblewrap
- etc.
